Pics: Teju Babyface's wife mugged on Eko Bridge, her car windows smashed

Comedian, Talk Show host and TV producer Teju Babyface's wife, Tobi Oyelakin, was on her way to the mainland at about 8pm last night when her car was attacked by hoodlums on Eko Bridge. She was in the car with her driver and 3 other girls in the back seat and were approaching the National Theater area of the Eko bridge when they encountered some traffic.

They had barely come to a stop when 4 boys leaped out of the shadows and knocked on the windows with torch lights and asked them to roll down the windows. They were still trying to come to terms with rising levels of panic when the hoodlums shattered the rear windows on both sides of the car and proceeded to rough-handle the ladies in the back seat and collect all valuables. Continue...

The hoodlums proceeded with impunity to open all the bags and pour the contents into nylon bags they brought along. This was in the presence of all other motorists on the bridge. The robbery went on for well over 2minutes from start to finish.

When they had finished and disappeared into the shadows and the occupants of the car were able to drive away, they saw policemen further down the bridge on patrol and reported t‎o them that they had been robbed, whereupon the policemen empathized (or sympathized) with them simply by saying 'ah, those boys have started again'.

Luckily no one sustained grave injuries in the attack and Teju's wife is fine but very shook up.

Speaking about the incident, Teju said;
"One realizes that this is becoming almost commonplace and acceptable in Lagos as reports reaching us indicate that it happens daily. That may very well be an axiom but I share this with you to bring attention to what threatens to become endemic. A great contretemps I must confess."

I really do not know what is going on around that area. The response these police pass after such sometimes, you will wonder if they are in know of it. I have experienced this before, imagine the police asking me if I can recognize him, if yes, they will take me to their zone so as to point to him.

Similar thing has happened to me in Onitsha. I was in a traffic jam around 8:45pm at Bridge head, when one hefty guy came to my window and said "Give me that money".. I saw starstruck and was shivering. He pointed his gun at me and repeated that. I don't know what gave me a strong mind cos I wasn't moved. He left and jumped unto a waiting motorcycle when he saw that nothing was coming from me. Guess what? I opened the door and ran away..lol.. Then I came back 5minutes later.. Funny enough, a friend of mine who was sitting infront of my car has already fainted.

This robbery on Eko Bridge keeps happening and the authorities in Lagos and the Nigeria Police do nothing about it! I bet when an official or someone who is related to the 'official' is robbed the hoodlums will suddenly be apprehended after the 'detective' work of our police. Rubbish! No country is perfect, by try to take the safety of your citizens seriously.

Madam sorry. The only good thing here is that it is now happening to people with voice. I hope the Lagos state government will do something. But how come the police are always a few minutes away???..Hmmm..

I was also attacked and robbed at gun point last two weeks on my way to work by two guys who alighted from a jeep.I just couldn't fathom it. They collected my phones, jewelries even handbag but i still give God all the Glory that my life was spared. Still recovery from the shock...

This is becoming too rampant in lagos of recent, my sister was robbed same way around onikan bridge early in the morning about 3 weeks ago, two other colleagues of hers in d same office have suffered same fate immediately after hers. Lagos state government and the NPF should please stand up to their responsibilities of securing lives and properties in this state. WHy should hoodlums be having a field day for d love of God???? please u perople should do ur jobs o and send those bastards to where they belong - kirikiri maximum prison.

My dear Linda, that how bad it is, we need to cal out to #nigerianpolice.. I know that spot and always avoid it when it starts getting dark. There is also another spot along oshodi-apapa expressway, I think that's at Charity bus stop, close to the overhead bridge that oversees another bridge on the other side. They rub and run into those hideouts. Unfortunately too, we have policemen around those places.
Its really sad.

Linda we need to organize a protest march to Ambode and the new President Elect. This has to stop. It happens every other day in Lagos and just yesterday they were attacking after Oshodi opposite Lastma office on your way to Anthony from Oshodi around 10.am in the morning. Lastma and police were there watching. I was just lucky my car was not attacked but they attacked several cars and I was watching them.
It was like that in Onitsha Anambra until Obiano came and stopped it last year. It is all about political will to tackle it. Dispatch plain cloths policemen in all the troubled and vulnerable spots 24/7 and this nonsense will stop.

Anonymous said...

And what is the CP of the State doing about it? Time has come for the right thing to be done. The Police should put on its thinking cap and strategise on what should be done to curb this rubbish. Though the problem also lies with the courts. When these rascals are arraigned, they get away with a slap on the wrists.

It happens every evening at orile on the express, alaba suru to mile 2 on the express , oshodi .Lagos State and the nigerian police needs to rise up to this. Or grant licence to carry guns

Anonymous said...

Linda, it is time for us to mobilize Lagosians and carry out a mass protest to the governor elect Ambode and the new President. It is impunity that is causing this as they operate unchallenged, and it has now become a habit. It happens every other day especially in mile 2 and environs, and I have stopped driving my car outside amuwo odofin. We were was almost mugged yesterday opposite lastma office in Oshodi on my way to the island. There was a little trafic going towards Anthony and then you see them sitting on the pavement and all of a sudden they start pouncing on cars breaking their windshield. We narrowly miraculously escaped but we saw them attack at least 6 different cars and this is around 10 am in the morning. Anambra state government stopped it with the same Nigerian Police, Lagos State government can stop it too. So please spread the word it is time foor us to march against this.
