Personal opinion and with all due respect to other rappers in Nigeria, but I think M.I is in a class of his own. I think he's not just the best rapper in Nigeria, he's the best rapper in Africa. Like, he's not even on anyone's level. He shouldn't even be on this list. We should be comparing M.I to Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and the likes and not Olamide or Phyno. That's my personal opinion. The fact that MI is your friend, your folk, a guy in your generation or simply because he's close to the media (which include you) does not make him the best or the most gifted rapper in Nigeria. Objectively and without any doubt, Modenine is far better than MI!! Modenine is the ONLY rapper in Nigeria that occupies a class of his own. Now, let me ask you; have you listened to MI last 3 personal songs/tracks?..7 days, Akpata and Chairman?..would rate such tracks/joints from your best rapper in Africa? go and check the lyrics of those songs cos i know you dont even know them! They're are watery and stooling lyrics! Rap is lyrics and word play! Endorsements does not quarantee "most gifted"...NO! If Nigeria pushes out MI as the best rapper, even with the power of the press (including you) he would not beat some other fierce rappers in Africa. Depends on the parameters Linda. MI is unarguably the most achieved rapper in Nigeria, his first album was bordered on being a classic and he was able to make rap more comprehensible through his style,adapting a flow similar ton kanye and lil Wayne; quite complimentary. Rap-wise his brother Jesse is more talented but has not zoned into rap so that dosen't count.
Now when it comes to lyricism and skill, no rapper in Nigeria beats Mode 9,this was confirmed @ the 2011 BET awards naija cypha,when Mode 9 outrigthly freestyled better, followed by Sinzu, now this is the trick, being a better rapper technically these days doesn't always translate into acceptance from the audience cos the style MI uses is a bit more accepted in terms of general rap knowledge and this counts a lot.MI would be the first to tell u Mode influenced his lyrical intensity, punchline and metaphors etc.
Mi's status makes him a chairman indeed,but the best"rapper tag...he could possibly take that cos people like to base best on acceptability. NOt just ok got it right really cos they said "most gifted" and i think all the rapers there are but Mode ( stands miles apart as a lyricist). In the U.S. they would put Kanye, lil wayne et all asc most gifted rappers, whearas a lot of legends like Rakim, Nas, Common, Ras kass, Guru(the late, Big Daddy Kane and more are legends who will always be pace-setters in Rap. We must separate acceptability and popularity from technical superiority when it comes to this and that is had to do these days.
