Governor Fashola builds first suspension bridge in Nigeria

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde has finished building the first suspension bridge in Nigeria. The 1.358km bridge, which will link Ikoyi (Alexander Street) to Lekki (Admiralty Way), cost about N29 billion to build and a toll will be collected to recoup the investment. The link bridge was built by Julius Berger.

Good but must they collect tolls for every construction project? Like they are doing Lagosians a favour by providing amenities. This toll will be for what duration?? Forever perhaps?

Lagos residents ( within these areas or so) took Lagos state to court over this issue as they dont understand why there should be another toll collection point on this bridge. And i think till the matter is sorted out, they are not to collect toll fees. No be small traffic this bridge go cause if toll is collected here sha.

That's how functioning societies work sweetie. Even here they collect toll on brushes. The money is used to reimburse and maintain the bridge. Aren't you the same people that complain about Nigeria's lack of maintenance culture?
I'm sure if they started collecting toll for the Onitsha bridge it wouldn't look the way it does. It literally looks as if it'll collapse any day

ME I DONT SEE HOW FASHOLA IS WORKING. HES USING LEKKI TO DO BUSINESS DEAL AND ALL YEE ODES OF THE WORLD STEADY PRAISING HIM. ITS YOUR KIND THAT THEY WOULD STEAL FROM WHILE YOU ARE WIDE AWAKE. OPEN YOUR EYES AND STOP BEING DECIEVED BY THIS USELESS GOVERNMENT.my only prayer is that as fashola and his goons are stealing from we lekki people. may the devil be stealing from his childrens destiny. me i dont know how it makes sense that there would be two toll gates getting into lekki.... im sure they would come and tell us 500naira or 1000naira.... and no one should tell me that oniru is an alternative route cause that road is nothing compared to what we had before their so called concession. lekki was so much better 10years ago.

Anonymous said...

ME I DONT KNOW HOW FASHOLA IS WORKING. GROWING UP WE WERE TAUGHT THAT ROADS ARE NORMAL SOCIAL AMENITIES. SO I DONT UNDERSTAND HOW ONE HAS TO PAY TOLL TO GET INTO LEKKI. NO ONE SHOULD EVEN TELL ME THAT THERES AN ALTERNATIVE ROUTE CAUSE THAT ROAD IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT WE HAD IN THE PAST. FASHOLA IS JUST USING LEKKI PEOPLE FOR BUSINESS. AFTERALL WE ARE THE RICH AND FAMOUS SHEBI(CAUSE MY FATHER DOESNT WORK FOR HIS MONEY). THE REALITY IS THIS WHETHER YOU STEAL FROM THE RICH OR THE POOR. GOD WOULD STILL PUNISH YOU AND YOU ARE STILL A THIEF. MY ONLY PRAYER IS THAT AS FASHOLA AND HIS GOONS ARE STEALING FROM WE LEKKI PEOPLE MAY THE DEVIL CONTINUE TO STEAL FROM HIS CHILDRENS DESTINY. BECAUSE MY OWN FATHER IS WORKING FOR HIS MONEY SO I SEE NO REASON WHY SOMEONE ELSES FATHER SHOULD COME AND BE STEALING IT. OSHI RUBBISH OF LIFE.GOD PUNISH YOU FOREVER FASHOLA... I WILL CONTINUE TO REMAIN VERY DISAPPOINTED IN YOU. CAUSE I ACTUALLY BELIEVED HE WAS A MAN OF INTEGRITY. BUT I GUESS HE HAD US ALL FOOLED. 29 BILLION FOR BRIDGE. DRAIN US FINISH O DRAIN US....

THE REASON WHY THIS COUNTRY DOESNT MOVE FORWARD IS BECAUSE WE AS CITIZENS DONT KNOW OUR RIGHTS!!!!
its so disgusting how people here are saying Fashola is working. what work is he doing. are you so blind that you cant see this as a business opportunity for him and his goons. we have a right to good roads. we shouldnt be paying taxes and still paying tolls on all roads leading to one area. its stupid and isnt done anywhere in thsi world. NIGERIA CAN NEVER MOVE FORWARD IF WE DO NOT HAVE GREAT EXPECTATIONS OF OUR LEADERS.asin wtf is all of this. fashola for president... God forbid. because he built two toll gates to one area.... even an illetrate is suppose to see this as a scam and people who have access to the internet are here praising him. how embarrassing is this country and its citizens. theres no need praying for this country cause if the citizens cannot expect the best and dont believe they deserve the best they would never get the best. thats simply how life is. how old am i and i already know this. FASHOLA AS FOR YOU GOD WOULD JUDGE YOU AND ALL YOUR GOONS.

why toll gate??definitely lagosians are paying for the construction of the bridge which is not suppose to be,,tho it a good idea but this is not how it works in abroad government should stop exhausting from people living below $1 a day.#29 billion for 1.3km bridge am confused how many are we in Nigeria???so if we want to construct 5 of the bridge in lagos hope we not gonna go bankrupt in lagos

Anonymous said...

That bridge is the most useless one in the world
It will destroy lekki phase one as an estate and also destroy ikoyi bourdillon road completely and it's environ by causing chaotic traffic like there is on awolowo road.
The bridge should have been done to go to third mainland bridge near yaba so commuters can by pass ikoyi and Victoria island thus reducing congestion in this areas but fashola and his cohorts decided to steal public funds and fool local Lagos residents as usual.
Tinubu has stopped him from opening it for now and when he does you will see the chaos.lagosians wake up.

Anonymous said...

so what happen's to tax payed by lagosians?. you collect huge tax from lagosians in the name of using the money to do projects for them, after the project, you turn around to collect toll. only in nigeria you collect toll on a bridge.

That bridge is not a suspened bridge in any form...na aethetics..google and see what they call suspended gbridges..down south south we have had bailey suspended bridges built by the oil companies ain the 50s upwards and railway bridges also suspended built i the colonial era.

Anonymous said...

It's not a suspension bridge, get the facts right and visit that place in Lekki-Ikoyi when you can. Those slings you see don't make it a suspension bridge.

(Engineering / Civil Engineering) a bridge that has a deck suspended by cables or rods from other cables or chains that hang between two towers and are anchored at both ends

Anonymous said...

Stop being ignorant. If you go to london and drive thru Dartford you pay toll fee. If you go westend you pay for congestion. Even in toronto, you pay per km on the 406. So its no biggie as long as the funds are being used apropriately. Let's stop being hypocrites, when we go to other countries we do things appropriately but when introduced here we complain bitterly yet we wish for Nigeria to be like the so called oyibo countries. Pay tax, wahala, pay for toll na war. Is it not money dt is being used for d so called infastructure? If we find some1 who is ready to do d same, let's support him en hope the govt after continues this legacy en not divert the funds. Every penny u make abroad goes back into d system whether u like it or not. So be thankful for what you have here no matter how bad it is.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous said...

What will this do to our security in Lekki phase 1? Not after paying 5 m as rent we will come and face the inconvenience of having a lot of traffic within the estate as well please I think this should be considered and sorted out before the bridge is opened. Sundays are usually hectic when churches close,it is one off and bearable since it is just for a couple of hours. I wonder what will happen when on a daily basis people try to assess this bridge from Lekki Phase 1 Estate.A bit worrisome.

Anonymous said...

Toll are ok,government need to recoup funds for other projects and hei,how else does Lagos State generate funds? Lets be reasonable and see with Governor Fashola that is giving his best to brush up this state. But I agree, what happens to Phase 1 residents? This bridge is right inside the estate, how will they be protected from the noise, traffic and even exposure to people who generally have no business inside the estate?

For all those of you thanking God and hailing Fashola thinking it would reduce traffic along Ozumba on week days. You are joking!!
I live in Lekki. The toll is N500 per trip! So to go through it, you would pay N1000 per trip.
The bridge is not for everybody. Its strictly for the lekki/ikoyi rich folks to ease movement. More so, Making the toll 120 like the current one would totally mess up the lekki, ikoyi environ and turn it to public highway which it is not meant to be.

A lawyer already filed a law suit against LASG as per the toll fees. I hope he does not succeed.

Something must be wrong somewhere with this news. How can a bridge that spans admiralty way and ikoyi be 1,378km. A bridge that long will be like from ikoyi to accra, ghana.

odobo grace, you're such a fool.if you're born and raised in California, you are Californian, regardless of your Parent's State of origin, same goes to a person born and raised in Lagos.

It's NOT a suspended bridge! The design is merely aesthetic.
LIB please get your facts right.

Even the 2 km steel golden gate bridge was built for $35 million Using over $190 million for 1.3 km concrete(concrete is suppose to be cheaper than steel). is a criminal act.

Most of the Yoruba that crowd and congest Lagos aren't from there either. They come from their slums in Oyo, Ondo, Osun, etc. so how many Lagosians are actually truly indigenous to the state? Probably less than 10%. So shut up claiming Lagos state when you know your father's land looks like a pit latrine. That's if you guys aren't still shitting in the bushes and in your backyards

Anonymous said...

Absolute Nonsense!!!!!! Spent all that funds on on bridge! Fashola has lost it because of all the praises every one gives to him! how about fixing other roads!!!!!!! Linda please just one day ask people to take picture of bad road in 9ja! you'll be amaze of the horrid sight! e.g. AGO PALACE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

another thieving "project" . we should not beat the drums for people who steal our collective wealth in the guise of so called projects. fashola and tinubu are milking lagos through overestimated projects that do not make life better for 99% of lagosians. how long naija? how long? must we continue to make our lil money everyday , mind our businesses and go back home after hours in traffic , put on the generator and same thing goes on the next day forever? we cant all be cowed for eternity.

@ anonymous 9.08am, its highway 407 in toronto

The project for building the bridge is under the BOT arrangement (Build Operate and Transfer) lagos state government didn't pay a penny for the construction of the bridge JB funded it. So they need to collect their money back and also make profit from it, thats the way it works. Won't be surprise if its a 30yrs contract anyways.

Anonymous said...

@Anon 9.08. Very well said.

I agree with toll gate issues. I dont think they are good for nigeria if it will create more traffic...we are in 2013..let people pay a road tax in lagos or Nigeria.. the roads can't be built without monies and I am sure federal govt. doesnt give enuff to the states already. it's simple let people pay ROAD TAX per year/6months and use that money to fund the roads. That way no toll gates within lagos and quick building of roads... the issue might be implementing and enforcing because alot of stuff in NIgeria aren't digitized yet!

femicavan said...

this is fantastic, but could that money not have been spent on on all our primary school in Lagos state, where the roof are falling off and the building cranking ,No materials for our children's to learn properly. this people are doing project where the private company they set up and partners to Lagos State project, thereby inflating contracts, and stealing the state money for their own benefit and ordinary people will continue living in ex-stream poverty. Gov, Fashola we are not fools.

Well-done sir.

@lorel204 said...

thumbs up BRF
at least he can try and concentrate on the lagos- badagry way road... that road has taken ages and needs attention asap+-

@lorel204 said...

lets c those complaining about tolls... u pay tax monthly and u have no roads and no light and no good schs and infact, no nothing!!! if BRF wants to collect tolls and reinvest in some other project, abeg lets give him a well deserved thumbs up. maybe those who chop our tax and clean mouth may one day, decide to learn

Anonymous said...

Fashola Foe President 2015.

Anonymous said...

Nigerians!!!!!...who told you that it is only in Nigeria that tolls are paid for amenities provided with your taxes. how much of tax do you pay? In north america, public funds are spent to create public transit, we pay for every ride, or how else will govt maintain the buses, trains, subway and streetcars?. If you want something good and well maintained, you pay for it.
Now the 29 billion sounds expensive but i cant comment on that because i dont have engineering background.
For toll paying aspect, aside maintaining the bridge, paying wages to resources manning the booths, remember Lagos state needs to continuously pay royalty to Uncle BT

Can't believe pple re still praising him for this extortion when re we going to wake up & see the damage the govt is doing to ordinary citizens who can not afford 3 squeal meals a day so patetic
