Nigeria 2nd in global maternal deaths

A Non Governmental Organisation, NGO, Save the Children, has revealed that Nigeria records the second highest number of maternal deaths in the world with number of pre-term births recorded at 773,600.

The Country Director of the group, Susan Grant, who disclosed this weekend in Abuja, during the unveiling of Mother’s Day and Born Too Soon report, stated that Nigeria recorded an alarming death rate of 144 women in a day, 10 deaths per minute, due to conditions related to childbirth and had the greatest numbers of pre-term births in the world due to population.

She attributed this situation to early childbirth, inaccessibility to healthcare, weak breastfeeding by mothers and early births of children (pre-term) - (Punch)

Na only for bad things we dey carry first or second. Namsense!

Yes oo, its shameful, we need to me known for good things just as Ngozi Okonjo came 2nd in world bank presidency selection. We need good reports like that. Not death, theft, bombing, kidnapping etc. Nigeria need one year fasting for revival.

It's clean and clear, our government is overwhelmed and our leaders are completely clueless as to which way to go. Effective Healthcare delivery I know ought to be a very top priority of a responsible and responsive government, but what do we get here? Scramble for public coffers! Looting of National Treasury! People die of what ordinarily should not kill, mothers dying at childbirth, infant dying at delivery. #GodIsWatchingThem! And His wrath is coming upon them all.
Let's keep praying for our nation, for God's divine intervention. WE'LL GET THERE SOON!

Its a shame that in the 21st century Nigerians still die over something that is natural aand must happen, why is this country so backward? Where are out leaders? They send their wives and kids abroad to gibe birth, thunder will strike all of u down one after the other.
Some Nigerians will come here and begin to call God to come to their aid! God no go do for una wetin una fit do for una self BIko!!! The earlier we realise that, the better for us it's d same God that created nigerians that created other countries that are protecting and providing for their citizens.
moreover an average Nigerian is selfish and does not give a rats ass about the next person, its same thing that affects our leaders.enough is enough we need a revolution O!!!-Palo

NYC-1 says: Probably the data that placed us 2nd is just statistics from Lagos, Abuja and other big cities like Kano and Enugu. What about the villages, who gets data from them? In light of this, we rank 1st. We continue to spin in circle bcos what we have are rulers, not leaders.

I hurt so badly over any maternal death, especially when it is avoidable. Our pregnant women are treated as numbers, not as humans, by some heartless nurses and midwives in govt hospitals.

just go and check our the stats of pregnant women that have died during this foolish strike! These doctors are wicked. There are certain arms of the hospital that SHOULD NOT have joined in the strike. they are wasting lives for greed! God go ask them o.

Linda, You are a spot. I sent you an FB message and I don't know if you saw it about 2 weeks ago but thank you for talking about Maternal Deaths. Now I understand why people try to have their children abroad regardless of the costs. My friend died 2 weeks ago after giving birth to her second child. Why? She was bleeding and they tried to transfer her to LUTH and she died in the process. She was just 33 years old. May her soul rest in Peace. Thank you once again

At least we no longer number one...
Among all the things Nigeria is batting at the moment, Maternal mortality is one that's preventable....but not much is been done...like everything else.

Let's get it right...Doctors are not the problem here...lack of valued health policies and procedures are the problem.... There shouldn't have been opportunity for doctors or any health care professionals to be on strike in the first place...

The anon reply: your brain is functional. Yes the facilities are not there, but. I insist that while the doctors are free to go on their strike to suit their greed, certain dept shld not join them. Its as simple as that.
As for you Joan, its a shame you have goat shit in a pouch as brain. Ode oshi! alaye baje! Doctors and their family die of hunger? You are a fool for that statement. Maybe na native doctor you know. Maybe when you or any of your family member needs the services of the ER dept, and they are on this stupid strike your brain go correct. Idiotic imbecile. I'm sure you live in a very bush village for you not to know that Lagos docs are paid 173k for a start. So where the suffer there? Seems you need to head further west! Keep going until u are COMPLETELY under water.

ok. but wait, i think if they want to do a ranking they should use rates not numbers, because we are the third most populated country in the world, if you compare us to other less populated countries of course na we go carry first, i bet China and India are also in the top 10...

meanwhile what are their sources, i know hosipitals and the Medical Associations try in keeping their data sha but i cant help but wonder that a country that cant get its own census right, has foreigners claiming figures for us... oh well :D
