dear Linda, I think you are confusing the figures- those countries on your list might show a higher minimum wage than Nigeria but these very countries are very expensive and therefore, have to have correspondingly higher minimum wage to account for this; as for the N18,000 minimum wage, some state governments have already started implementing it. The problem really is not the removal of the fuel subsidy but CORRUPTION- trust me, if we can recover all that stolen loot, it will be more than enough to go round in Nigeria

The minimum wage is not been paid in virtually all the 36 states as at today and even the 18k take home pay,with this nonsense subsidy will not take you home,it will only take you from your office to the bus stop and there you are stranded so where do you go from there,in essence,even the 18k is not enough for transportation especially now that transportaion fare is doubled,this is minus feeding,savings is a forgone issue,shei na pesron wey never chop wan save,we cant continue this way,life is getting harder

Do their businesses just die off; I presume that there is infrastructure dedicated to the subsidy industry as-is. What safety brackets have been put in place for the subsidy beneficiaries? The public focus is on the G-36 and others listed but what about all the companies along the entire value chain; from NPA to the transporters et al. What is a cabal? Is there really a cabal or are we giving stakeholders a wrong name? What are the economics of 'an aggressive plan to encourage the construction and refurbishment of refineries? There is a lot of work to be done by the private and public sector, in partnership.

You don't understand how this fuel subsidy removal stings until you actually buy fuel. When I drive now, I watch my fuel gauge like some sort of horror movie.
After my calculations, I discovered I'd be spending at least N360,000 on fueling my car alone annually, excluding car maintenance, generator fueling and feeding. In what way does 18k minimum wage provide for any of these.
Linda, the reason why those figures are lower for other OPEC countries is because they have their own refineries. Also teh governements of those countries do not subsidise the fuel. The fuel subsidy removal actually makes economic sense because the monies will be used to rebuild the refineries. Also removal of the subsidy brings about deregulation in the oil sector which will also be beneficial like deregulation in the telecoms secor with new entrants into teh market . that way foreign investors and private sector investors will also invets in teh oil sector and build more refiniries. Thsi will bring about competition and eventually the price of oil will reduce and savings from the removal can be used to benefit the Nation. However this is only an ideal situation i.e. we are assuming Govt will actually use the monies wisely and not squander it. Also even though the subsidy removal is right what Govt shoudl have done is to phase it out to reduce the effect to the general public. Also Govt needs to improve the welfare of the citizens, better healthcare, trasportation etc that way the citizens would not die from the effect of the fuel subsidy removal. Also Govt shoudl show they are sincere by bring to justice all those so called 'kabals' that have been defrauding Nigeria.
Linda did you bother to consider the population of this countries 9ja is over 150million okay. When the govt created new ministries(nigdelta,ICT) u people didn't complain. The above are further figure that look at the population of all the other opec countries and what is available to each citizen of such country on a daily basis and Nigeria ranked the lowest. S/Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE can give fuel free of charge. Our fight in my opinion should be targetted at getting all the Small Scale Business and transporters get subsidized so that major commodities can stabilize while as private participation is encouraged, the prices for every others will be reduced. The govt can also consider fuel allowance for every worker up to a particular amount to cushion the efect for workers earning 18000 Naira per month.

Isn't the current xchange rate for Naira and Dollar N159 --> $1 or thereabouts? Ok, I pay $3 and change for 1 liter of gas. 3 * 159= I'm paying at least N477 per liter in Queens, NY. So from this the Naija cost of fuel per liter doesn't look so bad...abi?

I have refrained from commenting on your blog in the past but this time I cannot resist! You have to understand that the ending of the fuel subsidy is just one of the necessities Nigeria must undertake if she is to move forward. Putting a stop to subsidising fuel will create a free market, an environment where private corporations can come in, compete with each other for customers and provide cheaper fuel for Nigerians. No private company will invest in a sector where prices are dictated by the government and not by natural market forces. An end to the fuel subsidy will result in increased activity from the private sector, employment (and therefore increased spending power for those employed, and in turn increased tax revenue for the government) and ultimately cheaper fuel!! Nigerians should look past the short term and see the potentials and future benefits. No sane oil producing nation subsidises it's fuel price...it's ludicrous! The subsidy has to go. WHat you have simply failed to realise (or mention) is that all these other OPEC members have a plethora of private companies competing with each other in the marketing of petroleum refined products...and I would know. I'm an oil trader.

even if US have higher price of fuel their minimum wage is more than double ours so you can't even compare. Normally, when the government cuts spending they implement other policies to cushion the effect. Fuel subsidy has become a way for people to steal from the government. People being oil companies and perhaps govt officials. They inflate the amount of oil they claim to produce in order to get a greater amount of subsidy. And they even go far as to illegally sell those subsidized oil, which is supposed to go to Nigerians, to foreign countries at a higher price. So, they get double the money: money from the Naija government as subsidy and profit from selling oil to foreign nations.
Removing the fuel subsidy, therefore, is a good thing. It will provide the government with more money to spend on the nation's infrastructure.
HOWEVER, this is Nigeria. The government has proven that they cannot manage the money they already have. I am still flabbergasted that the president allotted about 3 million Naira for food for the First Family, and another 5 million Naira for the First Lady's office renovation. The government has disappointed us according to past experience. So, people are enraged that the government is going to be getting another source of income while things are deteriorating for the masses.

If the govt had done any one of this or more than one, which would be impressive: -kept the April date for fuel subsidy removal -fixed a refinery and kept ongoing plans to fix the rest -taken a 50% reduction in salary -increased the minimum wage to 50,000 naira (which is still petty change) -fixed federal roads -actually prosecuted a corrupt politician (we have many) -explained the matter of fuel subsidy better without being condescending -treated unemployment Then the people might not be as angry as they are.
I'd like to think this government knows what it's doing by removing this subsidy, that is if it isn't fraudulent & there was subsidy. I know not a lot about the oil industry but I do know that those governing Nigeria do so in the most expensive way to the detriment of Nigeria & Nigerians. My point is simply...I'd like for them to cut costs from their own end. Slash their costs by removing so many unnecessary things, then they can come clean & tell Nigerians this is how much we've sacrificed/saved for the country & the people can listen to them. I agree with you that Nigeria has to undergo some measures of austerity but the decision of cutting too far and too fast is going to cripple the economy. austerity may create conditions for growth in the long run (and i emphasize "may" because we all know the efficiency of our leaders)but if there's no economy to grow then what is the point? If you look at countries like Peru and Greece when they implemented austerity and then later started promoting growth when the economy collapsed, it did not make any difference because they left it too little too late; now think of what will happen in Nigeria where our leaders are not very educated and corrupt.If the leaders are hell bent on cutting spending then why is GEJ budgeting 1 billion naira for his food and millions of naira for miscellaneous expenditures. In UK here, the coalition government has implemented national austerity but government spending has significantly reduced and they have passed several policies to try and cushion this effect.

Today's exchange rate is approx $1=N160
so Average Fuel cost in the US is

In Abia, fuel yesterday was N170/L. What this means is that Naija is now paying about what the US pays per Liter. Give the Infrastructure in the US, and opportunity available for gainful employment, this is mad!!!!
Can't believe Dr. Iweala gave a completely wrong data about pump price the way she did. Comparison of international price is usually done in PPP calculations. Income is not the same in all countries and CPI & RPI are completely different.

The fact is the main problem is and will remain CORRUPTION. I still ask - the billions Nigeria has derived from crude export, of what benefit was it to Nigerians? None! I live in California, USA and the price of gas is $3.59 per gallon. A gallon = 3.78litres. And this price is not fixed...It flunctuates on a daily basis based on demand and supply. My issue is not with the removal of the subsidy because if you think of it critically, the country stands to benefit from it in the long run. But again you cannot compare Nigeria with all this developed countries you're listing because things work in those countries, industries dont use fuel to power generators, road networks are fantastic and you will not spend 2 1/2 hours from Ikeja to VI because of traffic. The problem is corruption and this is what the government needs to tackle. The Nigerian government has failed the Nigerian People such that people no longer have trust in the system and as such do not believe that the gains from the subsidy removal will be channelled into making Nigeria a better nation in terms of infrastructure, etc. I pray for Nigeria with the whole of my heart but sincerely we all need to stop being greedy. American gas prices are listed in gallons.
1 gallon = 3.79 liters.
Current day prices in the US may range from $2.75 to $3.50. Please divide that value by 3.79 and you'll realized that the US price is less than $1/liter. In some locations, 75 cents per liter.
To all the olodos above who said Linda calculation for the US is wrong, Linda is actually right. The $3 you pay in the US is per Gallon which translates to 4 liters. So u should all get your calculations right and understand the difference bewteen gallon and litres.

As an ever optimistic Nigerian, I believe this great nation will be great again. This fuel subsidy removal can actually be a good thing in disguise. The 1st in line of a much needed realignment of government investment. Of course... it's going to take sacrifice on our part.
Methinks this deregulation it should not result in more money entering Govt coffers. Deregulation would mean that oil markerters would now import fuel or refine locally and sellbased on how demand for fuel is with competition forcing prices down ultimately.
To expect a windfall of money which would now be managed by this Kolade group would suggest that this is really TAX ON PETROL not deregulation or subsidy removal. Govt has a right to tax but as the Boston tea party brings to history of democratic governance there should be no taxation without representation of the Nigerian people and the Nigerian people have not been taken on this matter.
Plus imagine the callous way it was carried out to ensure they "hit gold". The fact is they have made their money even if its reversed. Starting on Jan 1st when the majority of Nigerians will need to travel about for one reason or another was very strategic!

dear Linda, I think you are confusing the figures- those countries on your list might show a higher minimum wage than Nigeria but these very countries are very expensive and therefore, have to have correspondingly higher minimum wage to account for this; as for the N18,000 minimum wage, some state governments have already started implementing it. The problem really is not the removal of the fuel subsidy but CORRUPTION- trust me, if we can recover all that stolen loot, it will be more than enough to go round in Nigeria

The minimum wage is not been paid in virtually all the 36 states as at today and even the 18k take home pay,with this nonsense subsidy will not take you home,it will only take you from your office to the bus stop and there you are stranded so where do you go from there,in essence,even the 18k is not enough for transportation especially now that transportaion fare is doubled,this is minus feeding,savings is a forgone issue,shei na pesron wey never chop wan save,we cant continue this way,life is getting harder

The public focus is on the G-36 and others listed but what about all the companies along the entire value chain; from NPA to the transporters et al. What is a cabal? Is there really a cabal or are we giving stakeholders a wrong name? What are the economics of 'an aggressive plan to encourage the construction and refurbishment of refineries? There is a lot of work to be done by the private and public sector, in partnership.

You don't understand how this fuel subsidy removal stings until you actually buy fuel. When I drive now, I watch my fuel gauge like some sort of horror movie.
After my calculations, I discovered I'd be spending at least N360,000 on fueling my car alone annually, excluding car maintenance, generator fueling and feeding. In what way does 18k minimum wage provide for any of these.

Linda, the reason why those figures are lower for other OPEC countries is because they have their own refineries. Also teh governements of those countries do not subsidise the fuel. The fuel subsidy removal actually makes economic sense because the monies will be used to rebuild the refineries. Also removal of the subsidy brings about deregulation in the oil sector which will also be beneficial like deregulation in the telecoms secor with new entrants into teh market . that way foreign investors and private sector investors will also invets in teh oil sector and build more refiniries. However this is only an ideal situation i.e. we are assuming Govt will actually use the monies wisely and not squander it. Also even though the subsidy removal is right what Govt shoudl have done is to phase it out to reduce the effect to the general public. Also Govt needs to improve the welfare of the citizens, better healthcare, trasportation etc that way the citizens would not die from the effect of the fuel subsidy removal. Our fight in my opinion should be targetted at getting all the Small Scale Business and transporters get subsidized so that major commodities can stabilize while as private participation is encouraged, the prices for every others will be reduced. I have refrained from commenting on your blog in the past but this time I cannot resist! You have to understand that the ending of the fuel subsidy is just one of the necessities Nigeria must undertake if she is to move forward. Putting a stop to subsidising fuel will create a free market, an environment where private corporations can come in, compete with each other for customers and provide cheaper fuel for Nigerians. No private company will invest in a sector where prices are dictated by the government and not by natural market forces. An end to the fuel subsidy will result in increased activity from the private sector, employment (and therefore increased spending power for those employed, and in turn increased tax revenue for the government) and ultimately cheaper fuel!! Nigerians should look past the short term and see the potentials and future benefits. No sane oil producing nation subsidises it's fuel price...it's ludicrous! The subsidy has to go. WHat you have simply failed to realise (or mention) is that all these other OPEC members have a plethora of private companies competing with each other in the marketing of petroleum refined products...and I would know. I'm an oil trader.

The campaign against the removal of oil subsidy is politically motivated, misconceived and lamentable.
Through your ill-conceived and misguided protests, you are indirectly, asking for the military to return to power. I hope you all know what happens when the army is in charge. All the Hausa / Fulani people that kept quiet about Boko Haram and their evil acts have all come out of their caves and exploiting the oil subsidy issue to their original intention of sabotaging President Goodluck's administration. It's a witch-hunt. It's not nice. It's not right.
You lot "protesting" are, knowing or unknowingly, doing their dirty work. You are stressing and causing disruption and inflicting damage to the Nigerian economy. Oil subsidy removal is an austerity measure. The world economy is going through upheaval. Nigeria's economy is in similar situation. The federal government of Nigeria have taken a bold and right step by addressing it. We should leave it at that, move on and solve other more pressing issues. Oil subsidy issue is not the biggest issue facing Nigeria.

Fuel subsidy has become a way for people to steal from the government. People being oil companies and perhaps govt officials. They inflate the amount of oil they claim to produce in order to get a greater amount of subsidy. And they even go far as to illegally sell those subsidized oil, which is supposed to go to Nigerians, to foreign countries at a higher price. So, they get double the money: money from the Naija government as subsidy and profit from selling oil to foreign nations.
Removing the fuel subsidy, therefore, is a good thing. It will provide the government with more money to spend on the nation's infrastructure.
HOWEVER, this is Nigeria. The government has proven that they cannot manage the money they already have. I am still flabbergasted that the president allotted about 3 million Naira for food for the First Family, and another 5 million Naira for the First Lady's office renovation. The government has disappointed us according to past experience. So, people are enraged that the government is going to be getting another source of income while things are deteriorating for the masses.
The govt wey never manage small money na im we wan give millions abi trillions. mba no.
If the govt had done any one of this or more than one, which would be impressive:
-kept the April date for fuel subsidy removal
-fixed a refinery and kept ongoing plans to fix the rest
-taken a 50% reduction in salary
-increased the minimum wage to 50,000 naira (which is still petty change)
-fixed federal roads
-actually prosecuted a corrupt politician (we have many)
-explained the matter of fuel subsidy better without being condescending
-treated unemployment
Then the people might not be as angry as they are.
I'd like to think this government knows what it's doing by removing this subsidy, that is if it isn't fraudulent & there was subsidy. I know not a lot about the oil industry but I do know that those governing Nigeria do so in the most expensive way to the detriment of Nigeria & Nigerians. My point is simply...I'd like for them to cut costs from their own end. Slash their costs by removing so many unnecessary things, then they can come clean & tell Nigerians this is how much we've sacrificed/saved for the country & the people can listen to them. As at now it is known to everyone that elected public servants governing Nigeria are rather kings/lords & untouchable & insensitive to the plight of common citizens. That's why in January you can impose this form of tax on people who you barely paid salaries that were returning from the expenses of enjoying the yuletide season who didn't plan for this. I agree with you that Nigeria has to undergo some measures of austerity but the decision of cutting too far and too fast is going to cripple the economy. austerity may create conditions for growth in the long run (and i emphasize "may" because we all know the efficiency of our leaders)but if there's no economy to grow then what is the point? If you look at countries like Peru and Greece when they implemented austerity and then later started promoting growth when the economy collapsed, it did not make any difference because they left it too little too late; now think of what will happen in Nigeria where our leaders are not very educated and corrupt.If the leaders are hell bent on cutting spending then why is GEJ budgeting 1 billion naira for his food and millions of naira for miscellaneous expenditures. In UK here, the coalition government has implemented national austerity but government spending has significantly reduced and they have passed several policies to try and cushion this effect.

I live in California, USA and the price of gas is $3.59 per gallon. A gallon = 3.78litres. And this price is not fixed...It flunctuates on a daily basis based on demand and supply. My issue is not with the removal of the subsidy because if you think of it critically, the country stands to benefit from it in the long run. But again you cannot compare Nigeria with all this developed countries you're listing because things work in those countries, industries dont use fuel to power generators, road networks are fantastic and you will not spend 2 1/2 hours from Ikeja to VI because of traffic. The problem is corruption and this is what the government needs to tackle. The Nigerian government has failed the Nigerian People such that people no longer have trust in the system and as such do not believe that the gains from the subsidy removal will be channelled into making Nigeria a better nation in terms of infrastructure, etc. I pray for Nigeria with the whole of my heart but sincerely we all need to stop being greedy. We need to stop wanting more money just to oppress people around us...mind you, if your neighbour is safe and okay, it affects you because then you do not have to worry about the security of your own life and property. 1 gallon = 3.79 liters.
Current day prices in the US may range from $2.75 to $3.50. Please divide that value by 3.79 and you'll realized that the US price is less than $1/liter. In some locations, 75 cents per liter.

We can't honestly compare d economies of those countries with ours as Nigerians. With d sad state of producing but not refining crude we're no bettet dan the us nd uk with respect to their fuel prices. As an ever optimistic Nigerian, I believe this great nation will be great again. In the midst of all this, I can't help but get the feeling that we are on the precipice of something, it could either start to get better or soo much worse. The subsidy removal, was performance was carried out shadily without enough information as usual to the public. Now, I know this is not the best time to see any sort of lining, silver or otherwise, but I hope to be hopeful. It's soo frustrating that the entire cost now has to be carried by the poor masses who are actually now made poorer by this.

I don't want to believe that people are saying that the removal of fuel subsidy is a good thing n its just a matter of how to properly spend d monry on building our refinaries. I usually stay away from Nigerians, even online. The more I interact online with Nigerians, the more I realise far too Nigerian people are deeply ignorant, lack knowledge and have no common sense. This fuel subsidy removal can actually be a good thing in disguise. The 1st in line of a much needed realignment of government investment. Of course... it's going to take sacrifice on our part.
Methinks this deregulation it should not result in more money entering Govt coffers. Deregulation would mean that oil markerters would now import fuel or refine locally and sellbased on how demand for fuel is with competition forcing prices down ultimately.
To expect a windfall of money which would now be managed by this Kolade group would suggest that this is really TAX ON PETROL not deregulation or subsidy removal. Govt has a right to tax but as the Boston tea party brings to history of democratic governance there should be no taxation without representation of the Nigerian people and the Nigerian people have not been taken on this matter.
Plus imagine the callous way it was carried out to ensure they "hit gold". The fact is they have made their money even if its reversed. Starting on Jan 1st when the majority of Nigerians will need to travel about for one reason or another was very strategic!

The federal government has done the right thing by removing oil subsidy. The government are on the right track. The major problems I foresee are management / implementation and corruption.
