So Goodluck Jonathan is daring Nigerians abi?

So Nigerians woke up today to the news that fuel subsidy has been removed...meaning that we will now pay N141 per litter of fuel...which used to be N65...an incredible 100% + increase.

You know what this will do to Nigerians? It will cause unnecessary suffering. Everything from transportation to food, to goods and services..EVERYTHING will skyrocket. Untold hardship, especially on poor Nigerians. Did the people in power even wonder how the poor will survive?

We don't have 24/7 electricity in this country, most of the time we need to fuel our generators, we now have to fuel it for N141 per litre? Are these people serious?

The Federal Government have all this excuses why the subsidy removal is necessary, forgetting that we are an oil producing nation and if our refineries were working, all this won't be necessary. So they are punishing us for their incompetence?

No security, no good roads, high level of unemployment...young people are frustrated, some are committing suicide and we now have to deal with this? How can we as citizens do nothing?

The PPPRA announcement when you continue...

PPPRA Announces Formal Removal of Subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS)
Following extensive consultation with stakeholders across the nation, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) wishes to inform all stakeholders of the commencement of formal removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), in accordance with the powers conferred on the agency by the law establishing it, in compliance with Section 7 of PPPRA Act, 2004.

By this announcement, the downstream sub-sector of the petroleum industry is hereby deregulated for PMS. Service providers in the sector are now to procure products and sell same in accordance with the indicative benchmark price to be published forthnightly and posted on the PPPRA website.
Petroleum products marketers are to note that no one will be paid subsidy on PMS discharges after 1st January 2012.

Consumers are assured of adequate supply of quality products at prices that are competitive and non-exploitative and so there is no need for anyone to engage in panic buying or product hoarding.
The PPPRA in conjunction with the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) will ensure that consumers are not taken advantage of in any form or in any way.

The DPR will ensure that the interest of the consumer in terms of quality of products is guaranteed at all times and in line with international best practice.

In the coming weeks, the PPPRA will engage stakeholders in further consultation to ensure the continuation of this exercise in a hitch-free manner.
Signed:
Reginald Stanley
Executive Secretary, PPPRA

65 to 130 is a 100% increase. N65 to N141 is waaaay more than than.

Generators use diesel, not petrol, so that cost remains level.

Overall, good job by GEJ, no reason to subsidize what need not be subsidized in the first place.

A. Click on my name to check out the link I have attached for Hon. Minister of Finance's position on the issue.
B. check out the following message allegedly from Tam David-West that's currently circulating on Blackberry:

‎1) One barrel of Crude oil = 42gallons or
159 litres

... 2) Our Refineries (i.e 4) Installed
(combined) capacity = 445,000
... barrels per day

3) Actual refineries capacity due to
ageing equipment = 30% i.e. 133,500
barrels per day
.
4) . . 133,500 barrels = 21.2 million litres

5) Local required consumption (F.O.S) =
12millions litres

6) It means that even our MORIBOND
refineries can actually meet our local
consumption need of petroleum.

7) The cost structure of crude oil (i.e.
Qua Iboe Crude Oil) production;
- Findings / development - $3.5
- Production cost - $1.5
- Refining Cost - $12.6
- Pipeline/transportation - $1.5
- Distr/bridging fund Margin -$15.69

True cost of one litre of petroleum
anywhere in Nigeria;
- Total sum cost = $34.8
- 1ltr cost = $34.8/159 litres = $0.219
- Naira equiv. 0.219xN160= N35.02k
- Add Tax N5 + N35.02 = N40.02

9) Let FGN refute the above composition
and if not, they should tell us how
they came about N65/litre.

10) Locally refined products cannot be
sold at International price.

....etc, etc.

Analysis done by Professor Tam David West, former Petroleum Minister.

This is going to affect everything. Prices for food items will go up, transportation will go up, everything! And who's gon suffer all this? The masses! We have a very wicked government. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has failed us! That man is a weakling. Universities (ASUU) is on strike, bombings everywhere, no security, nad roads, Lekki residents just started paying toll fees at the toll gate on a Federal road! Funny enof, d masses areill not at the receiving end. The president will not feel all this because he doesn't pay for fuel. gosh..this Linda Ikeji you're so...don't you watch the news, debate etc (or do you just talk to create more ramblings from readers ! ) The hardship from this subsidy removal is nothing compared to the poverty Nigeria would be facing soon if it doesn't stop borrowing money to cover this oil subsidy of which most goes to people like IBB & OBJ's pockets !

When the communication subsidy was initially removed wasn't it N35/min to call with MTN? How much is it today? In the past having a house phone was a rich man's thing now even a pure water boy has a cellphone!!! How many telecom companies do we have today?

Same goes for oil, this would increase competiton and oil refineries which means employment opportunities for our youths. Nigerians there is no free lunch, lets endure this for awhile cause the market competition would soon start.

Should we continue to bury our heads in the sand like stupid ostriches and hope that the problems will go away? Educate your readers and let us for once ask pertinent questions. Like Adams Oshiomole said, government is not a popularity contest. We are in deep shit in this country so i advice we all raise awareness for governmwent to clean up our law enforcement agencies and empower our judiary so that people who are stealing us blind can be pursued and brought to book so that the collective wealth of all will truly be used for all. Let's face it LIB readers, we need to deal with these issues now or face greater hell in the future. Nigerians need to wake up to the real world and face our problems squarely.Ghana recently removed their own fuel subsidy and heavens did not fall. Don't whip up unnecessary sentiments here based on half information. It's not just about being the most popular blogger on cyber space. Inform yourself so that you can equally inform others correctly. We must give government time to prove themselves before we begin to crucify them. Publish this if you like, it is my opinion and i am entitled to it.

President Goodluck Jonathan has the best intention for Nigeria. He has done the right thing by removing oil subsidies. It's a bold step in the right direction. He should be applauded. Those who are profiting from oil subsidies are Hausa / Fulani billionaires, not the poor / average man on the street. Nigeria is not a nanny state and must not fund the oppulent lifestyles of the Hausa / Fulani elites who alreay own 95% of major oil companies in Nigeria.

The new price of N141 is over a 100% increase. This is cruel... Removal of subsidy is no longer an issue here, but the price differential highlights the level of mindlessness of our so called leaders. Do these people live and lead in this country? I am amazed at their level of disconnection. For the civil populace, what next? Go to churches to pray, fast and wait for God to come down from heaven because of Nigeria, a country that had since been deserted by God. Pains my heart that Nigerians do not know the implications of the rot being perpetrated by our leaders. The unprogressive nature of Nigeria as a country had actually eroded the dignity, reputation and fortunes of the black race the world over, because we are the most populous black nation. If we do well as a nation it will reflect on other black nations and people. Due to lack of leadership Nigerians are all suffering everywhere around the globe. The largest population of African prisoners, prostitutes, asylum seekers, fraudsters etc in every major cities across the globe are Nigerians. Transformation is taking place in Arab nations, South America, Asia. When are we going to rise??? Nigerians have suffered too much as a people, this is the time to draw a line in the sand.... Boko Haram bad as they are is just an intro..............

I pray that something would be done soon by the authorities to stop this bloodshed.

ok lets see. . In the past one yr, the price of crude has gone up,while the
local currency the naira has depreciated in value Yet the price of petrol(PMS) has been held artificially steady at N65. Ladies and gentlemen this is no way to run an economy There is no incentive to conserve the use of fuel as prices rise no incentive to develop alternative sources of Energy, like EVs or SOLAR Think for a moment if the US Govt came out after the personal computer
was invented in 1980 and decided to intervene (and set prices)cause the
cost was to high for the masses, there would be no apple,HP,Microsoft and
all other IT innovators today that have brought down the price of a pc to
commodity status Again think for a moment, why subsidize fuel?.why not bread, cement,
drugs. etc,the whole subsidy game is a slippery slope, that the GOVT best
not get involved in. Cheap fuel is a license to non critical reasoning, thats why the Europeans
have huge taxes on fuel,so mass transport can bloom, the environment
saved, and alternative energy developed. Nigerians say they have Crude in their backyard so PMS should be cheap,
but can they refine the crude by themselves without importing machines
made elsewhere?, can we build a refinery without outside help?,if the
answer in no we cant, then we dont deserve cheap fuel. Let us get innovative for once, build this economy into a knowledge based
one,and stop this laziness of the brain and body that we exhibit time after
time so yea am for subsidy removal, perhaps it will clear our cities of okada, and
instead have us build trains, trams and subways perhaps the next great invention like a car that runs on water or air will
come from Nigeria. . who knows. .

The removal of the subsidy is the only way Nigeria can move forward. The country is hugely unproductive and so relies heavily on petrodollars for its sustenance and largely fir foreign exchange. Linda if u had done u homework u wld have known that the full functioning of our refineries would not solve the problem. Nigeria needs at least 5 refineries of 100000 gallons capacity in each to sustain it's local consumption. Unfortunately the leaders are fools and would remain so and nigerians have always accepted it. Which fool exports its raw material and buys it back refined? Only a giant...you know who

So, is it Boko haram dat is wrecking dis malicious havoc called 'forced removal of fuel subsidy' on Nigerians, or are they the one dat blew up the refineries that are not working. Then again, when asked during the live debate on NTA last week, Badluck Jonathan said and I quote 'the issue of fuel subsidy removal has been discussed at the last PDP members meeting and it's been agreed dat it's the best thing for nigeria, I mean we need to create jobs'. Foolish Ignorant prick i say. I dnt support Boko haram at all but I wonder and continue to ponder wat it will take to get us Nigerians to face up to the really of wat we have done to ourselves? Corruption has gotten so obese now, u need to be a civil servant to see the rate of last minute end of the year fictitious syphoning of national funds. It's so pathetic. Linda,
I re-watched the Lagos debate on fuel subsidy removal on channels tv
http://channelstv.com/global/videos.php?vid_shows=xcli_95

And Femi Falana summed it up nicely, there is nothing the federal government can do or say, they CANNOT BE TRUSTED. No matter the nice and logical sounding arguments, they make promises they have no intention or will to keep! history gives us evidence: SAP, privatisation, tollgates. If they really meant well, why did they not reduce cost of governance? why did he not build refineries before the removal? why did they not implement laws that they promised in the past?
More importantly, what are we going to do about this. action time. the ball is now in our court...

orange said...

This is the best thing to happen to Nigeria. I know a lot of people will be shocked bey what I have just written. But believe me, a few greedy, rogues are the ones reaping the gains of the subsidies all these while. Removing the subsidy will transfer the gain into the pocket of the government who is expected to use it to provide necessary infrastructure for the populace. With this, the people can hold the government liable and ask for what the gain is used for in another year. See, my people, we need to move on and stop these canals and oil companies from reaping us off. The likes of Femi Otedola and co are smiling to the banks everyday in fact they are laughing wholeheartedly to the banks at the expense of our poor people. If you visit Dubai today, you will be shocked at what the country has been turned into. Nigerians are running there for solace. But how much more can we run? The government needs to be forced to sit up like that of Dubai and even emerging economies like Thailand, Singapore and co. Enough of the suffering.
All they were doing is that they were giving the populace peanuts in place of what they truly deserve. It will be tough at first, but the overall result will be heart warming and will improve the socio political lives of the people.
Let us open our eyes to the truth and force the government to be responsible to the people.

C'mon. it's not the end of the world. If your business now cost's you twice as much, increase the price of what you're selling.

I think governors too should expand their roads to accomodate bicycles cos me I don't mind.

It's funny cos even some countries that don't produce oil have subsidy. Which ever way, I'm cool with it.

These are signs that the end is near, all the wrong things are being prioritised (e.g Boko Haram being taken lightly) and national robbery and deprivation continues to take place in broad day light. The rich get richer whilst the poor stay poor...even if these are all old cliche news, like the message that the end is near-repent, the fact is one of the two will hit harder and by then, it might be too late for any of us. It's a constant struggle but we have to always seek our heavenly creators face in the midst of all this. The good book says blessed are the meek and as God's children we will experience hardship but we need to learn to encourage ourselves in the Lord for our Father lives and is always more than able. This world that seems to be our all now will one day be like a neighborhood we once lived in, Life in itself is a phase. We as Nigerians and Africans need to take heart and stop allowing ourselves to be used by evil, from the government to our yahoo boys. As we see through news like this, there's only so much we can control in our everyday lives in terms of what is imposed on us so the state of our souls and whom we give it to is all we can fully control. It takes more than giving tithes every Sunday, spending your new years in church or asking the pastor to pray for you just like it takes more than a man called Goodluck to bring any real luck to our beloved Nigeria. We should all pray for others as well as ourselves and ask how we can serve God and not always dwell on how he can reward us. Bottom line is Nigerians are well known to be fervent, maybe even aggressive in our Christian beliefs so the vision is there, we just tend to loose our sense of direction and lack a well-structured and consistent order. Greed is what's crippling Nigeria. May God continue to help us all.

i prayed to God years back,.........father i do not want a job, a car or any material thing except a visa to God's own country........after 19 yrs God answered that prayer...

i wake in this blessed land everyday without fear,...i sleep without fear........

l told my friends that even if i get a job with a salary of N350,000 i will never desire to live in this country....i may be coming in once in a while but not to live in nigeria.......

i saw what this nation would look like 20yrs ago....i told my friends my only prayer....the wise ones took my advice and now they breath fresh air of life....they may not have all the money in the world but atleast they have some security in the countries that they are living in..........

i drive smoothly here in houston texas without any dust punching in my eyes and ears,....i eat 3 square meals...what else.......do i want in life

nigerians have worked so hard people like linda...but what do they get from the government,...insecurity, unemployment...lack of basic amenities all over........

south africa may have tried, even ghana....but africa is a total shame.....

Dear Linda,
Its a shame that removal of fuel subsidy has become the so-called remedy prescribed by president Gridlock Johnathan for the sixth largest oil producing country in the world.To provoke your thoughts further, here is a poetic article titled "Patriotic Response-Ability;

These so-called leaders with their undying love for money
Are not only draining our economy of its milk & honey
But are also reducing our rich and fertile lands
To mere crumbs of fruitless sands

See how they change and treat our constitutions like prostitutes
In order to suite their self-fish pursuits
An without regard for the people’s need
Their corrupt deeds breeds greed upon greed

Now all over the world ours is a sad story
Because they’ve chosen to celebrate and compensate vain glory
Indeed it’s really painful to know that they derive pleasure
From looting all that we truly treasure

Therefore time is ripe enough for an inspirational revolution
And rather than just complaining I will become a solution
By empowering many people through my intellectual capacity and capability
Despite being deprived of enabling platforms to showcase my patriotic responsibility

Quote to Ponder
“A leader’s personality and authority are greatly diminished when he fails to realize that he was called upon and authorized by his people not only to lead but also to serve them.”- D.C

Linda this news is very dishearthening. How can a responsible govt take this kind of decision and just slam it on us like we r dummies and ve no right. R we in a military regime? They can't remove subsidy wen there are no viable alternatives. If we had 24hrs light, good roads and excellent transportation with trains and oda mass transit facilities that have been subsidised, then they can remove the subsidy and we won't complain. But now everything would double in price and we are still on the same ol' salaries o. Enough is enough. We nid a change NOW. Jonathan has to get his act together or get out. Where is the NLC and y r they not doin anything? Our jounalist nko? The various youth associations? God help us.

We are the architect of our own problem and i dont know how long we are still going be on "Sidon dey look" it is just a matter of time, we are going to adjust as time goes on.
We are all Nigerians and we knew how things being runned by those called looters not leaders, all wot they care for is their immediate families and their self enrichment. National assembly publicised the name of those companies benefited from subsidy money and hardly u could hear any step being taken on how to recollect the money but they now want masses to reap wot they did not sow and only time will tell. If it is a country that Govt hv the love for their masses, it would hv been easier for citizen to reason with the Govt but we all know that the money will go to their pocket again as usual

IT is A 100%+ increase. price was N65.

@ orange really? this isnt a nation of 1million people. its 160 million!!!
they must think through before making descisions. its about time Nigerian leaders actually took descisions that are in the interest of the masses. they dont care about paying 13,000 for a full tank of fuel. they dont care that chicken will be 2k each in the market and thet dont care that millions that travelled home for the holidays are left stranded because the N5000 naira transport fare they saved up for all year has now been increased by N8000. If they want to start saving Nigeria some money, they should cut down the money they pay themselves. what sort of country budgets Capital Expenditure: N1.32 Trillion and
Recurrent (non debt) Expenditure: N2.472 Trillion? and spends more on debt financing than on education or even the fact that NASS is budgeting 14billion to travel & etc? if you want to save Nigeria some money, cut down the waste. cut down NASS's pay and plug all the leakage. Dont take it out on the masses Mr Presido.....ah ahn...

GEJ, why not first of all rdeuce the cost of running ur govt wich is the most expensive democracy in the whole world, then u cn b talking of removeing fuel subsidy. U and ur executives feed on billion of naira while the masses feed on less than a dollar per day no light, no hospitals, no refineries, everything has been taking away frm the masses to feed the elite, send their children abroad, for their wifes to buy diamond while the masses suffer. who will help us?

"50% + increase" is also very mathematically correct so all you so called I TOO KNOW 'mathematicians' should take note...; The '+' in '50%+ increase' implies that the increment is greater than 50% & this is mathematically true.
However from the perspective of informative communication, this is poor journalism as it misleads us to subconsciously think that the increment is not that severe...
Now enough of the jargons & back to the main point - Its just a pity that our leaders don't really understand the dynamics of our economy, & know when to apply certain measures... The removal of the subsidy is not bad, but the timing is outrageous! Basic amenities are not in place & we're still trying to get over the terrorist attacks and now this??? Its a shame...
